What Is ISO 42001? AI Management System Standard Explained

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the world's first international standard for an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) — a framework for how an organization governs, develops, deploys, and monitors AI systems responsibly. Published in December 2023 by ISO and IEC, it sets requirements across the full AI lifecycle covering risk management, transparency, human oversight, and continual improvement, structurally similar to ISO 27001 for information security. It applies to any organization that develops, provides, or uses AI-based products or services, regardless of size, sector, or which AI models it relies on. Certification is voluntary and issued by independent accredited certification bodies after an external audit — ISO itself does not certify anyone. For organizations building out AI governance, ISO 42001 gives regulators, customers, and partners a recognized way to verify that AI risk is being managed systematically rather than informally.
